A practical guide

Pick the format your next destination actually needs.

The converter creates JPG, PNG, or WebP output from supported still images without sending the file to a conversion service. The best target is determined by the job: JPG is a familiar choice for photographs, PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparency, and WebP is a modern web format that can handle both photographic content and alpha.

Changing the extension alone is not conversion. PixelShrink decodes the source pixels and asks the browser to encode a new file in the selected format. That process cannot restore detail already discarded by an earlier lossy save, and it does not guarantee a smaller file. Animated sources become a still image rather than retaining their animation.

Conversion is not automatic optimization

PNG output from a photograph can be much larger, while WebP or JPG may reduce bytes by discarding some visual information.

Alpha needs a capable target

PNG and WebP can store transparent pixels. Converting to JPG permanently replaces them with the background color you choose.

Re-encoding has limits

A new format can improve compatibility or workflow fit, but it cannot recover missing resolution, removed detail, or original camera data.

Does converting to PNG improve quality?

It prevents additional lossy encoding in the new PNG, but it cannot restore detail that a JPG or lossy WebP source already discarded.

Which format should I choose for transparency?

Choose PNG for broadly supported lossless transparency or WebP when your destination accepts it. Do not choose JPG if the clear background matters.

Will animation be preserved?

No. The current canvas-based workflow is for still images and produces a single-frame output.
