    A practical guide

    Choose what “smaller” should mean for each image.

    The general compressor handles JPG, PNG, and WebP in one local batch. It decodes each image, lets you keep its format or choose another, and shows the new size before you download. Quality affects JPG and WebP output; PNG uses the browser’s lossless encoder and ignores the quality slider.

    A lower quality value can reduce photographic files substantially, but it may soften texture, introduce blocks around edges, or remove subtle gradients. Start near the default, inspect the preview, and move lower only when the smaller file matters more than fine detail. An already optimized image—or a PNG with complex pixels—may stay the same size or grow.

    JPG rewards sensible quality changes

    Photographs usually tolerate moderate JPEG quality reduction better than screenshots or text-heavy graphics. JPG cannot preserve transparent pixels.

    PNG size is content-dependent

    PNG is lossless and excellent for transparency, interface captures, and flat graphics. Browser re-encoding is not guaranteed to make an existing PNG smaller.

    WebP is built for the web

    WebP can represent photos and transparency efficiently, but a publishing system or older workflow may still require JPG or PNG.

    Will every image become smaller?

    No. The result depends on the source image, its existing optimization, the chosen format, and the browser encoder. Keep the original when the measured output is larger.

    Does compression change the pixel dimensions?

    This compressor keeps the decoded width and height. Use the resize tool when you also want fewer pixels.

    Can I target an exact number of kilobytes?

    Not reliably in one pass. Browser encoders accept a quality preference, not a guaranteed byte target, so compare the actual result shown for each image.
